To catch a fish, you must think like a fish.
This not-so-ancient proverb (can you guess where it was quoted from?) is an easy to understand metaphor, but who has actually tried to put themselves in the fins of a fish?
Fish are relatively simple minded, so it shouldn't be a hard to think like one. But I tried anyway, and as it turns out it's not so easy! To think like a fish, you've got to observe fish behavior. The behavior can differ based on fish species, age, time of day, weather... is it spawning season? You've really got to know an individual fish to think like that fish!
This exercise gets infinity more complex when we try it on humans. Or, "Just put yourself in their shoes." To truly understand what another person is thinking, you'll have to not only grasp the entirety of the life experiences that their behaviors pull from, but where do we even begin to comprehend the differences in another's brain chemistry compared to our own?
Maybe it's impossible to fully put ourselves in someone else's shoes, but it doesn't mean we should give up on trying to be sympathetic to another's point of view. It's a great reminder that, while some behaviors should not be excused, it might help if we try to better understand the why's behind the actions and not prematurely judge someone.
We may not be great at catching fish, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't go fishing.
Warm regards,
Jimerson
